Harvesting

Camping

Camping is the only harvesting skill you do not start — it rides along on your fighting. Kill something with a skinning knife active and you take the hide, and hides are what Tailoring turns into bandages, bags, cloaks and the tackle a tamer needs. Anyone who fights is already halfway to a leather supply and usually doesn't know it.

How you train it Carry an active skinning knife and fight. Every kill rolls for leather and for skill; tougher creatures carry the better hides.
What you need An active skinning knife. Higher leather tiers need real skill on top of a tough enough kill.

Hides, by quality

Which hide you take is decided by your Camping skill. How MUCH of it comes off is decided by what you killed.

Training needs a tough enough kill

Camping is the one harvesting skill with a floor on WHAT you kill, not just how often. Past each rung below, easier creatures stop teaching you anything — this is why a Grandmaster miner can skin rats all day at 84 and never reach 85.

Hitting that gate does not stop the hides. A creature below your rung still yields leather exactly as before — you simply stop gaining skill from it. If your Camping has stalled while leather keeps arriving, you have outgrown what you are killing and need somewhere harder.

Skinning knives

A knife has to be made active before Camping will run, and every tier skins exactly as well as any other — what you buy with a better one is how long it lasts.

Not every kill yields a hide. A skinning knife has to be active, and even then the hide is a chance rather than a certainty.
